whaaat? (all about the zine)

What is The Purpose of Life is to Love?

It’s a Ghostbusters: Answer the Call (AKA Ghostbusters 2016) appreciation zine.

What’s in it?

  • almost EIGHTY PAGES of ghost-bustin’ goodness!
  • 10+ personal essays and articles about topics including
    • why Patty is great
    • personal connections to the film
    • Theodore Shapiro’s film score
    • cosplay
    • writing fanfic
    • and more!
  • featuring not just Jillian Holtzmann but also Patty Tolan, Abby Yates, Erin Gilbert, and Bennie (for real)
  • 2 poems
  • a mini-RPG
  • 16+ original pieces of fan art
  • cosplay photos
  • two exclusive interviews (one with Andrew T. Shaffer, “ghost” writer of Ghosts from Our Past, and one with Karan Soni, who played Bennie)

from 17 fantastic contributors of assorted national origins, first languages, genders, and ages! Boo-yah! (Thank you all for your amazing contributions; this wouldn’t be real without you.)

Is this a bunch of X-rated fanfic?

No, that’s what Archive of Our Own is for. This zine is rated PG-13 for a couple of slightly naughty words and some non-explicit discussion of sex and sensuality.

How much?

Free as in Holtzmann’s cheesesteaks, baby.

That is: the digital versions are free. Right now, a public release of the print version isn’t in the works, although the plan is to distribute paper copies to contributors and some of our heroes from the cast and crew.

If you want to share it with your friends, we’d like you to give them the link so we can see how many times it’s been downloaded, but you can just send them the file if that’s not possible.

I think it’s worth a couple of bucks! How can I throw money at you?

Thank you! Please throw a few bucks at a nonprofit/charity/museum that you think your favorite Ghostbuster would support.

Who’s behind all this?

Are you going to do another Ghostbusters zine? Or do a fic zine?

Depends on how long it takes to recover from doing this one.

Are there any other Ghostbusters ATC zines in existence?

Yes, two GBATC zines (If You See Something, Say Something and Conductors of the Metaphysical Examination)  were produced in the UK, and there’s at least 1 doujin from Japan, though it’s no longer available. If you know of any available Ghostbusters 2016 zines that we could link to, please send us the info using the contact form below.

This is more of a comment than a question.

Sure. If you want to contact us, use the above Twitter/tumblr links, or this contact form:

FAIR WARNING: If you send us a tedious diaperbaby tantrum, we’ll screencap it and share it with all of our friends so it can be thoroughly mocked. Then we’ll forget it ever happened, because really…we have stuff we actually care about. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Anything else?

We’d like to give special thanks to FunKelly for their encouragement on this project, as well as their assistance in getting that Karan Soni interview.

Wait, I was looking for the website with the cool buttons and stuff.

That’s GloriousWeirdo.com, singular. They are GREAT (and we chatted about the accidental URL overlap, which is totally our fault and not theirs). Check out their outstanding Ghostbusters: Answer the Call buttons and shirts, plus other things “for nerds, fangirls, feminists, queers, geeks, & other cool people.”
